Kommos

In the Gulf of Messara, between Kalamaki and Matala, Kommos was the harbour of the Minoan cities of Phaistos and Agia Triada — an important trading centre linking Crete with Egypt and the Middle East.

Excavations have uncovered large buildings, warehouses, shipyards and a later Greek-Phoenician temple, all bearing witness to the site’s long history of use. The archaeological site is situated right above a beautiful, sandy beach.

Tip: Combine archaeology with a swim — Kommos beach is one of the most beautiful in Messara.
