Amnissos & Cave of Eileithyia

To the east of Heraklion, Amnisos served as the harbour of Knossos during the Minoan period. On the low hill by the sea, the famous ‘House of the Lilies’ was excavated, featuring frescoes depicting flowers — among the finest examples of Minoan art.

In the same area lies the Cave of Eileithyia, dedicated to the ancient goddess of childbirth and motherhood. Worship here continued uninterrupted for millennia and is even mentioned in Homer’s Odyssey.

Tip: Combine your visit with a swim at the nearby beaches of Karteros.
