Theriso & Gorge

A few kilometres south of Chania, the road to Theriso winds through a beautiful, shady gorge with vertical walls and lush vegetation — a cool route amongst plane trees.

The village itself holds a special place in history: it was here in 1905 that the ‘Theriso Revolution’, led by Eleftherios Venizelos, began, leading to the union of Crete with Greece. The village has a small historical museum, whilst its tavernas are renowned for their Cretan meat dishes.

Tip: It’s very popular for Sunday lunch — go early in the afternoon.
