Near Ierapetra, on the Isthmus of Ierapetra, the Minoan settlement of Vasiliki is an important Early Minoan site (c. 2500 BC). Although smaller than the palaces, it is of particular value to archaeologists.
It was here that the distinctive ‘Vasiliki-type pottery’ was first discovered, with its striking speckled, red-and-black hues created by a special firing technique. The remains of the ‘Red House’ reveal an advanced form of settlement organisation for the period.
Tip: A peaceful spot — ideal for those who love prehistoric archaeology.
