Ancient Lato

Above the village of Kritsa, ancient Lato is one of the best-preserved Doric cities in Crete. Built between two hills in a naturally fortified position, it flourished mainly during the Hellenistic period.

Visitors walk uphill past well-built walls, steps, the marketplace with its cistern, the prytaneion and the foundations of dwellings. The city took its name from the goddess Leto. Its harbour was where Agios Nikolaos stands today.

From the summit, the view towards Mirabello Bay is one of the most beautiful on the whole island.

Tip: Combine this with a visit to Kritsa and Panagia Kera.
