In the southern White Mountains (Lefka Ori), the Imbros Gorge is the ideal alternative for those who want to experience a Cretan gorge without the exertion of the Samaria Gorge. Approximately 8 kilometres long and featuring a gentle downhill route, it can be comfortably crossed in 2.5–3 hours.
It starts from the village of Imbros at 780 metres and descends to Komitades, near the southern coast. Along the route, the gorge walls narrow dramatically — at one point to just two metres — whilst centuries-old cypresses and holm oaks grow on the rocks.
For centuries, the gorge was the natural route linking the mountainous region of Sfakia with the sea.
Tip: At the exit, tavernas offer a lift back to Imbros; ask before you set off.
