Liondarion & Krini Morozini Square

Eleftherios Venizelos Square, known to everyone as ‘Liontaria’, is the meeting place and the bustling heart of Heraklion. This is where the city comes to life, amidst cafés, patisseries and promenades.

Dominating the centre is the Morozini Fountain, built by the Venetians in 1628 to supply the city with water. Four marble lions — the only remaining parts of an older monument — support the basins, which are decorated with relief figures from Greek mythology.

The historic centre unfolds around the square: the church of St Mark, the Venetian Loggia (now the town hall) and the pedestrianised 1866 Street with its street market.

Tip: Sit down for a fresh juice or a bougatsa and soak up the lively atmosphere — especially in the early evening.
