Gonia Monastery (Kolymvari)

In Kolymvari, at the base of the Rodopou peninsula, Gonia Monastery (Odigitria) stands imposingly overlooking the sea. Built in the 17th century, it is one of the most important monasteries in western Crete.

Its fortified architecture protected it from pirates — an Ottoman cannonball is still embedded in one of the walls. It houses a remarkable collection of Byzantine icons and relics. The Orthodox Academy of Crete is located next to it.

Tip: From the courtyard, the view of the bay is breathtaking.
