The Venetian walls of Heraklion are amongst the best-preserved in the Mediterranean: a colossal fortification stretching approximately four kilometres in length and featuring seven bastions, which withstood the prolonged Ottoman siege of Chandax (1648–1669) — one of the greatest sieges in history.
At the Martinengo bastion, at the highest point, lies the grave of Nikos Kazantzakis. Engraved on the simple wooden plaque is the phrase that sums him up: ‘I hope for nothing, I fear nothing, I am free’.
From up there, a panoramic view stretches out over the whole city, the sea and the mountains — a place for contemplation and a favourite spot for a walk.
Tip: Head up there in the late afternoon to catch the sunset over Heraklion.
