The new Archaeological Museum of Chania, in the Halepa district, is housed in a modern, award-winning building and showcases the history of western Crete from the Neolithic period through to Roman times.
The exhibits come mainly from ancient Kydonia, which lay beneath the modern city: Minoan vases, Linear A and B tablets, seal stones, gold jewellery and impressive Roman mosaic floors.
Modern museum design and ample lighting showcase the artefacts, making a visit enjoyable even for non-specialists.
Tip: It’s located just outside the historic centre; combine your visit with a stroll through the stately neighbourhood of Halepa.
