Built on a low hill overlooking the fertile plain of Messara, Phaistos was the second most important palatial centre of Minoan Crete, after Knossos. The first palace was built around 1900 BC and, after being destroyed by an earthquake, was rebuilt on an even grander scale.
Walking around the site, you can make out the large central courtyard, the imposing staircases, the storage areas with their enormous jars, and the apartment complexes. It was here that the famous Phaistos Disc was found – the enigmatic clay object bearing stamped hieroglyphs that remains undeciphered to this day and is on display at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.
Unlike Knossos, Phaistos has not been restored, which gives it an authentic, atmospheric feel. The view towards the peaks of Psiloritis and the Asterousia Mountains is breathtaking, especially in the afternoon.
Tip: Combine your visit with a trip to nearby Agia Triada and Gortyna. Wear a hat and take some water with you — there’s very little shade.
