Situated next to the famous beach, ancient Falasarna was a major naval and trading centre in the 4th–3rd centuries BC, with a powerful military harbour. Today, however, the harbour is… on dry land.
This is due to a geological event: around 365 AD, a massive earthquake raised the whole of western Crete by several metres, leaving the ancient harbour ‘suspended’ above the present-day coastline. The site is dominated by the famous monumental stone throne, the purpose of which remains unknown, as well as cisterns, quays and walls.
It is a rare opportunity to see how nature has rewritten the geography.
Tip: Combine a visit to the archaeological site with a trip to the beach for a full-day outing that ends with the sunset.
