Perched at the foot of Mount Psiloritis, at an altitude of 740 metres, Anogia is one of the proudest and liveliest mountain villages in Crete. Its history is deeply intertwined with the resistance: the village was burnt down by the Germans in 1944, but was rebuilt.
Anogia is a cradle of Cretan music, the birthplace of legendary lyre players such as Nikos Xylouris and Psarantonis. The tradition of weaving remains strong, with handmade woven fabrics and embroidery sold in the village’s workshops.
Trails leading to the Nida plateau and the summit of Psiloritis start from here, whilst the tavernas serve excellent lamb and antikristos.
Tip: If you happen to be there during a village festival, you’ll experience an authentic Cretan celebration with lyra music until the early hours.
