Apezanes Monastery

At the foot of the Asterousia Mountains, on the Messara Plain, the Apezanes Monastery (of St Anthony) is one of the most historic monasteries in southern Heraklion. Its imposing, fortress-like architecture bears witness to its defensive role.

It was once a major centre of learning with a renowned school and library, as well as a stronghold of resistance against the occupiers. Today it is well-maintained, with a beautiful courtyard and a small ecclesiastical museum.

Tip: Combine your visit with a trip to the Kalyviani Monastery and Phaistos.
