Fodele

Nestled amongst orange groves and flowing streams, Fodele is one of the coolest and most picturesque villages in Heraklion, on the north-western edge of the prefecture. The valley is fragrant with citrus fruits, especially in spring.

The village is renowned as the birthplace of the great painter Domenikos Theotokopoulos (El Greco). On the edge of the village stands the restored house attributed to his family, now a small museum, whilst nearby is the Byzantine church of Panagia with its remarkable frescoes.

Tip: Sit in a tavern by the river and try some fresh locally-squeezed orange juice.
