On the south-eastern, secluded coast of Lasithi, near Goudoures, Kapsa Monastery is one of the most impressive in Crete: its snow-white structure appears to spring from the sheer rock face, directly above the Libyan Sea, at the mouth of a rugged gorge.
The monastery is associated with the figure of Elder Joseph (Gerontogiannis), an illiterate shepherd of the 19th century who, according to tradition, performed miracles and revived the monastery. His relics are kept here and attract crowds of pilgrims.
The combination of seclusion, the gorge and the sea makes for an unforgettable setting.
Tip: The road there is long and desolate — make sure you have plenty of water and fuel.
