Faneromeni Monastery

High above Mirabello Bay, near Gournia, Faneromeni Monastery is built on a striking, precipitous site, almost ‘suspended’ from the cliff, at an altitude offering boundless views of the sea.

The old church is carved into a cave and houses a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary. Access is via an uphill, dirt track, but the reward — both spiritual and visual — is great.

The tranquillity and the rugged landscape create an atmosphere of profound serenity.

Tip: The road is rough — drive slowly and carefully; the view is well worth it.
