Ancient Polyrrhenia

Situated above the village of the same name, near Kissamos, ancient Polyrrhenia was the strongest and best-fortified city in western Crete. Built on a naturally fortified hilltop, it controlled the entire region.

The archaeological site preserves sections of the acropolis, Hellenistic and Roman walls, cisterns hewn into the rock and tombs. Venetian and Byzantine buildings were later constructed on top of the ancient foundations, creating a unique palimpsest of eras.

The view from the top, towards Kissamos Bay and the surrounding countryside, is breathtaking.

Tip: Wear sturdy shoes for the uphill path to the acropolis.
