Archanes, a few kilometres south of Heraklion, is considered one of the most beautiful and best-restored villages in Greece, having won awards for its architectural restoration. The cobbled alleyways, colourful neoclassical buildings and squares lined with tavernas paint a picture of authentic Cretan elegance.
The area is a historic wine-growing region: some of Crete’s finest wines are produced here from local grape varieties such as Kotsifali and Mantilari. Many wineries open their doors for wine tastings.
Around the village lie important Minoan monuments: the sanctuary of Anemospilia and the extensive necropolis of Fourni, one of the richest in the Aegean.
Tip: Spend an afternoon strolling around and having dinner — Archanes really comes alive in the evening.
